There are apparently also two gag endings, which I haven’t seen yet. – There are actually multiple endings to the game, depending on the choices you make in the final moments. Every real day also provides a bonus – for instance, you get a 2x item bonus in every area on Wednesday. Certain items can only be found this way, and as I mentioned before, the system is based on real time so you could potentially idle in the pause menu until the cats come back. There is at least one cat in every field/dungeon/town map (only in the real world – the game actually goes out of its way to tell you this), and finding a cat in an area allows you to deploy all the cats you’ve found to that area to search for items. – If you like cats, you’ll probably enjoy the cat search sidequest/item finding system. Gaining a certain amount of points in an element will provide you with a skill/technique, for instance, gaining 610 in Fire will let Jude learn Hitenshouku. Elemental cores can be gained after battle or from resource points on the field/dungeon map, which are converted into a specific element depending on the absorber you have equipped on a character. – The new growth system (Arrowsoul Orb?) is pretty interesting – instead of the Sphere Grid-like system in Xillia, you now have elemental absorbers and elemental cores. Maxwell! Milla sounds significantly more dignified and authoritative. Alternate! Milla sounds more petulant and, to be fair, more bitchy. Alternate! Milla and Maxwell! Milla have completely different personalities, and it shows in the voice acting.
– Miyuki Sawashiro, Milla’s voice actress, is brilliant. You also need a certain amount of affection if you want to take a party member into the extra dungeon that unlocks after you clear the game. If you’re into shipping/fanfiction, these skits are glorious fuel to that fire (every time I see one it feels like a confession scene in a dating sim or something). On that note, every character has a unique skit when they give Ludger presents, where they basically gush at him. I think you also need to have high affection with a character for them to be able to do a link hi-ougi (mystic arte).
– Each member of the party has an affection gauge for Ludger – as their affection grows, they will award Ludger with new skills and techniques. Finishing all the episodes for a specific character gives them a joke weapon.
Doing an episode will allow you to gain affection from that character just by finishing the episode, as well as from certain choices you make during that episode. These unlock automatically as you progress through the main story. – Character Episodes are sidequests that focus on a specific member of the party and some of the issues/challenges that they’re facing. I’ll talk a little about some of the standout/core features of the game: Grade is used in a grade shop whenever you start a new game plus, and you can buy upgrades like double item drops, carryover of items, increased max item limit and so on to enhance your new playthrough. In previous titles, you got grade after each battle, but in Xillia and Xillia 2 you get grade when you earn an associated title – sort of like how achievement points are earned when you get an achievement. In case you’ve never played a Tales game before, grade is a special in-game currency which is awarded depending on how well a player plays the game. Apparently I amassed enough grade to purchase all the upgrades I wanted to use in a new game plus, so I went ahead and started one.
